FAQ on Auto Transport

Where will my car be picked up and delivered?

Upon booking your move, we will attempt to provide door-to-door service. If you live in an area not safely accessible by our transport trucks, we may require you to meet the truck at a nearby parking lot that can accommodate the truck. We also have terminals to service all  major cities. These terminals provide direct pickup and delivery from your door.

How far in advance should I schedule the transport of my vehicle?

The further in advance you place your order, the more likely that your vehicle will be delivered in the time frame that you request. However, if an immediate pick up is necessary, we can typically arrange for your vehicle to be picked up within two to three days. If the requested pick up location is in a major city, same day pick is available in most cases at no extra cost. To insure that your car is moved within a relatively timely fashion, we request that you schedule your move as soon as possible.

Can I pack personal belongings in my vehicle?

No, your car and its trunk compartment must be free of all personal belongings. There are several reasons for this. The primary reason being that the Department of Transportation does not allow for the transportation of "personal items" in a car that is being hauled by an "Auto Carrier". The second reason is that any personal items in the vehicle are NOT covered by the carrier"s insurance. Lastly, all trucks have weight limitations that they must comply to. With the excess weight of a customers personal items placed within the car being transported,

this can put the carriers transport truck over its weight limitation, and cause delays. So please, NO personal items in your vehicle while being shipped, or you may be subject to an additional surcharge.

Do I have to be present when we pick-up or deliver your vehicle?

Yes, we require you, or a designated person, be present upon pick up of your vehicle. A contract "bill of lading" will be signed with you at the origination point. If you are not able to be there, please call our office prior to the pick up date, to confirm an alternate "in care of" person. However, if there are any changes to the pick up, or delivery address after you have placed your order, there may be an additional charge.

Can I drop off or pick-up my vehicle at a terminal?

Yes, we do have terminals within most major cities. Prior arrangement is required for this service.

Will I save money if I deliver or pick-up my vehicle at a terminal?

Yes, by using either the pick-up or delivery terminal, you can save approximately $50 off the standard quoted price at each end. This request must be pre-arranged when placing your order.

How will I know when A-1 is coming to pick-up or deliver my vehicle?

To arrange a convenient pick-up, or delivery time, you will receive a telephone call 12 to 24 hrs. in advance. This call will inform you of the general time you can expect the transport driver to arrive. If the transport driver's schedule changes, they will call you to provide an updated time for pick-up, or delivery.

What is door to door service?

Urban areas are most often accessible for pick up and delivery service to your doorstep. Rural areas can produce difficult situations, making it impossible for our trucks to access your residence. Our transport trucks must avoid any roads that may have overhanging trees, because the tree branches could damage the vehicles being transported. As well, transport trucks are typically 80 ft. long, weigh 80,000 lbs., and are built low to the ground. This limits their ability to maneuver in tight spots. For the safety of your vehicle, our driver may choose a parking lot, or interstate turnout that is as close as possible to your residence. This will allow the driver to safely load, or unload yourvehicle. It is always up to the drivers discretion as to where they will drive the truck, since the driver is responsible for both the safety of the transport truck, and the transported vehicles.

How do I prepare my vehicle?

Please have a minimal amount of fuel in your tank. A quarter tank orless is sufficient. You must remove any loose parts. For example, shells or bed liners that are not bolted down may blow off. Phone, radio, and CB antennas that do not retract, MUST be removed, or they may get broken. If you are shipping your vehicle to Alaska, or Hawaii, you will be charged an additional de-gassing fee if your vehicle has more than aquarter tank of gas.

Does A-1 Auto Transport have Insurance?

Yes, A-1 cargo insurance policy covers your vehicle for full replacement value, while in our possession.

Can You Guarantee a Pick-Up Delivery Date?

Upon your requesting a specific pick up date, A-1 will make its best attempt to accommodate your needs, unlike other companies that charge a fee for this service. If the exact date you request is unavailable, A-1 will work within a 2-3 day time frame of your request. We will not guarantee a delivery date. Vehicles being moved are placed into the mostefficient routing schedule by our dispatch department. When booking your move with A-1, you will be provided with an estimated transit time that your shipment will take, in order that you may plan ahead.

It has been longer than I expected, and my vehicle has not been delivered!

Occasionally a late delivery can happen. Listed below are a few reasons for possible delay of delivery. Often a customer will need an immediate pick up, which does not allow ample time for a reservation on one of our transport trucks. A-1 will pick-up the vehicle on the day requested, but we will need to hold the vehicle, until the first space becomes available on one of our trucks. Uncontrollable factors such as mechanical breakdowns, unfavorable weather conditions, and traffic situations, can also cause delays. Department Of Transportation regulations can also affect the delivery time. We are aware of how important your vehicle is to you, and we will provide you with a realistic time frame for delivery.

How long is this quoted price good for?

This quote is good through the next Business Day. However, A-1 Auto Transport, Inc. reserves the right to adjust any quoted price.

Car Shipping Video

Welcome to A1autotransport.com, the last stop for all your moving eeds. Shipping your car or truck to another place because of a move or online sale can be a challenge. It would be so much easier if I could just put my vehicle in a box and take it to the post office, but auto shipping is much more complicated than that. We’ll begin by going over domestic auto shipping, including open air and enclosed trailers. Then we’ll talk about international auto transport, using Roll-on Roll-off and container services. Then we’ll wrap up with the preparations required to ship your vehicle.

First Up, Domestic Shipping. When sending your car across the country, you’ll have two main options: Open air or closed trailer transport. The most common option for domestic auto shipping is the open air trailer. Who hasn’t seen those huge open air trailers loaded with cars driving down the highway? By choosing this option your vehicle will be securely placed on a trailer and driven to it’s new location.

Now, if your vehicle is your baby, and you don’t want it exposed to the elements on an open air trailer, then you may consider shipping your auto in a closed trailer. With this option, your auto will be placed on a trailer within an enclosed area. Your auto will receive the best level of protection available, but as you can probably imagine, it’s also the pricier option.

Now that you know how to ship a vehicle within the country, let’s look into international auto shipping. Shipping your vehicle internationally is a bit more complicated than shipping your vehicle domestically. Since your vehicle will have to be transported by ship, there are some restrictions you have to know before your auto can set sail.

For instance, many countries will not allow you to bring in autos that are more than five years old. So that old minivan might have to stay behind. Also, there could be restrictions on the size of the engine, and the location of the steering wheel. Once you know you can ship your vehicle overseas, you can decide between two options: Roll-on Roll Off service, or container service.

The first is roll on roll off service, which is the more common and cheaper option. Your auto will be rolled onto, or driven onto a ship. Then it will be secured with braces onto an interior deck, well protected from the weather. Upon reaching the destination, the vehicle will be rolled off, or driven off the ship.

If you want your vehicle to be even more protected, you can choose container service. Inside the container, the auto will be secured to wooden blocks, and strapped into place to keep it from moving. With this option, your auto will be stored in an individual shipping container, and loaded onto the ship.

Whether you’re shipping your auto domestically or internationally, there are several things you need to do before your vehicle can be shipped.

First, wash your vehicle for accurate inspection. Since the vehicle will have to be inspected before it’s shipped, have it washed and cleaned to insure accurate inspection.

Second, remove any personal items, since autos will not be able to ship with personal items inside, go through the vehicle, including the trunk, and remove any valuables, documents, and other items.

Third, leave less than a quarter gallon of fuel in the gas tank. Extra gasoline in the engine can leak out in transit. Ship your auto with a minimal amount of fuel, ideally a quarter gallon or less. Keep some extra gas on hand when you pick it up, so that you can make it to the nearest fueling station.

Fourth, remove or protect any loose parts. Remove the antenna and any detachable parts. For parts that can’t be removed, like spoilers, fog lights, and side mirrors, wrap them with protective covering.

Fifth, insure the car is in good working condition. You’ll probably want to drive your vehicle upon it’s arrival. Make sure the battery ischarged, the fluid levels are good, and the tires are properly inflatedbefore shipping.

By now, you should be an expert in auto shipping. There’s just one thing though, finding a company to move your vehicle. That’s where A1AutoTransport.com comes in! We’ve already done the work for you, to find reputable auto shippers that will give you the best estimates and shipping service. Fill out the quick form on our website, and get free quotes from up to seven auto shippers. Then you can compare and save.

Prepare your vehicle to be shipped by A-1 Auto Transport

There are a few things necessary to avoid any problems with your auto transport. These practices are standard among auto shippers and can be expected whenever dealing with an auto transporter.

  1. Remove any personal items from your vehicle.
Auto Shippers are not allowed, by the Department of Transportation (DOT), to carry anything defined as Household Goods. If your vehicle exceeds it’s standard gross vehicle weight, you can be accessed a minimum of $250 overweight fee. Likewise, auto transport insurance will not cover any items left in the vehicle.
  2. Leave about a quarter of a tank of gas in your vehicle.
The driver will need to drive your car on and off the auto transport truck. More than a quarter of a tank can be hazardous and excessive.
  3. Take note of the condition of your car.
Dings, dents, scratches or other wear and tear to your vehicle, when the vehicle is picked up by the car hauler, will need to be documented on the Bill of Lading provided for you by the A-1 Auto Transport driver.
